The Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), USA, has paid a courtesy call on H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, to discuss how the association and the Embassy can collaborate to address pressing challenges faced by Ghanaian students in the U.S. The meeting, held at the Ghana Embassy in Washington, D.C., brought together senior members and leaders of GRASAG led by Yao Kuwornu, President of the association for a comprehensive discussion on student welfare, educational support, and the broader role of the diaspora in Ghana’s national development. During the session, GRASAG leaders requested that the Embassy explores avenues to facilitate access to government-targeted scholarships and other funding opportunities that could help students complete their programs. Ambassador Smith welcomed the engagement, expressing delight at the proactive approach taken by GRASAG. He emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships between the Embassy and Ghanaian student associations abroad to support not just education, but also the broader objectives of national development. Highlighting the government’s 24-hour industrialization agenda, the Ambassador noted that Ghanaian students studying in the U.S. acquire vital skills and expertise that can be applied to initiatives and investments in Ghana. He stressed that the return of these skilled graduates to Ghana will significantly contribute to the success of industrialization projects and attract diaspora investment. “It is very encouraging that most of our students return home after completing their studies, bringing knowledge and expertise that contribute directly to programs like the 24-hour industrialization agenda,” Ambassador Smith said. “They are a vital part of the human capital needed to drive Ghana’s economic transformation.” The GRASAG delegation also shared updates on their ongoing initiatives, including mentorship programs, networking events, and community outreach projects aimed at supporting Ghanaian students and connecting them with opportunities both in the U.S. and in Ghana. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to explore practical steps for implementing collaborative initiatives, including scholarship facilitation, mentorship programs, and skills integration with diaspora-led business ventures in Ghana. Both the Embassy and GRASAG agreed to maintain regular dialogue to ensure continued support for Ghanaian students and the broader diaspora community. Ambassador Smith lauded the delegation for their dedication, urging all Ghanaian students abroad to remain engaged and to see themselves as active contributors to the nation’s development. He reiterated that the Embassy will continue to serve as a bridge between students, diaspora professionals, and opportunities back home.
